Under Fives Roundabout pre-school and playgroup groups are open each weekday during term-time in the mornings between 8:40 and 3:10 in our own building adjacent to Mayfield Primary School, Warwick Road, Cambridge. 

Children can attend flexible hours but must attend from either 9:40am-11:40am and/or 12:40pm-2:40pm and must attend a minimum of two sessions (which may include a morning and an afternoon on the same day, or on two separate days).  Session times will have been agreed before your child starts and it is important that you adhere to these agreed times.  

We also have a lunch club that runs from 11:40am to 12:10pm.  Children bring their own healthy packed lunches.  

The Pre-School caters for children in their pre-school year (the year beginning in the September before the child turns four). It has three qualified and experienced staff, sometimes supported by another member of staff and a volunteer parent / carer.

The Playgroup runs weekdays during term-time between 910am and 1140 am. If there is sufficient demand we may also be able to open for afternoon sessions. If it would be helpful, your child may be able to attend from 840 am depending on space and adult:child ratios. Please speak to Sam Capes, our manager, to discuss this.

The group has two qualified and experienced staff, sometimes supported by another member of staff and a volunteer parent / carer, and usually has no more than 12 children for each session.

Nursery Education Funding: - All children are eligible to up to 15 hours of childcare a week during term-time from the term after their third birthday. Additional hours are charged at £4 per hour.

Both Pre-school and Playgroup work within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The main principle of the EYFS is learning through play.

Type of activities provided for the children

We provide a wide variety of open ended resources ensuring all abilities and interests are met, extended and stimulated with children inspired to learn. There are always mark making opportunities available using a wide spectrum of materials on a small and large scale. Children are encouraged to be independent in all aspects of their learning, given support where necessary and guidance to progress at their individual rate.

Daily routines

In the morning we enjoy a structured register time ending with a whole group exercise or relaxation. This is followed by free play whereby children choose from the activities across both rooms and the outdoor area. As the session draws to a close we have whole group story time, occasional show and tell and singing. Afternoons run slightly differently with whole group exercise prior to story time towards the end of the session.

The playgroup has a smaller group at key times gathering at the beginning of the session for register and the end of the session for singing and storytime. Children are encouraged to explore the outdoor area and preschool room during free play enabling them to build friendships with their older peers and access the sometimes more challenging resources available in the preschool room.
